King’s First XI Hockey fall just short against Grammar

Our 1st XI Hockey boys went down to Auckland Grammar 1st XI by 1-2 in a high intensity Super city encounter, which also doubled up as a clash for the Birchall shield.

In extremely wet conditions, King’s started the game really well and made repeated forays into the Grammar circle but could not convert the early ascendancy into goals. Grammar got their first goal in the 7th minute against the run of play which came off a deflection from a defenders stick. The second goal came in the 15th minute of the second half from a defensive turnover.

With the game seemingly lost at 0-2 down, the King’s boys went on the offensive and dominated the last quarter of the match. The team pulled one goal back when Aiden Fraser scored off a well taken penalty corner. The team managed to force three more penalty corners thereafter, one in the last minute of the game but Grammar defended well to see out the match.

Despite the loss there were plenty of positives for a young King’s team who will take a lot of learnings from this defeat and keep building for the rest of the season.
