First XI Football defeat resolute Kelston Boys’ High School

In a top vs bottom of the table clash at home, the 1st XI Football team scored twice in each half to defeat Kelston BHS 4-0. It was clear from the first whistle that Kelston had a game plan designed to limit the number of goals conceded and frustrate the King’s attackers for as long as possible. Despite numerous entries into the Kelston defensive third, King’s were thwarted by defensive blocks, good goalkeeping, and deflections for corner kicks. From one of these in the 33rd minute, H Dickson rose like a salmon to head powerfully past the Kelston goalkeeper to initiate King’s scoring. Just 3 minutes later, some incisive combination play down the right flank led to F Rathbone finishing off the move with a fine strike into the bottom left corner, for a halftime score of 2-0.

Kelston persisted with the same defensive “park the bus” plan at the commencement of the 2nd half, but again King’s scored early from an attacking corner with H Dickson steering the ball into the net. With the King’s goalkeeper merely a spectator and in fact touching the ball only three times in the 2nd half, the fourth goal took a long time to be scored. Before this, there were many attempts which the Kelston goalkeeper saved or defence blocked. There were notable shots on target from F Havrda, K Woodhams, N Marange but it was only in the 89th minute that the goal net again bulged courtesy of a fine strike from F Havrda.

Final score was a 4-0 win for King’s with one more match to play before the Term 2 holiday break.
