Football 1st XI play Rutherford to a 2-2 draw

In the first competition match of Term 3, the 1st XI Football team headed west to play Rutherford College at the unusual venue of Starling Park, Ranui and on an untypical playing day of Friday evening. With the pitch in use up until 15 minutes before kickoff, both teams’ warm-up space was constrained, but once the match started, the play didn’t reflect this. The first quarter hour’s play was uneventful in terms of goal scoring chances, but in the 17th minute, F Rathbone ran onto a defence-splitting pass from F Havrda which he buried in the bottom left corner of Rutherford’s net.
This King’s goal sparked Rutherford and it wasn’t long before they were awarded a penalty after a clumsy clearance attempt by King’s felled a Rutherford player inside the penalty box. J Pearson saved the initial and follow-up attempts with the help of the goalpost and crossbar, but couldn’t do the same in the 33rd minute when a Rutherford strike from outside the penalty box hit King’s net. Rutherford then took the lead in the 39th minute after King’s failed to clear the second phase ball off a corner kick. 1-2 at halftime.
The second half started brightly for King’s when a deep cross from the right by H Chadwick found W Lowndes rushing in at the far post and he tapped-in to even the scoreline. Whilst King’s had the better of possession and territory until the final ten minutes, each shot was just wide of the goal or saved by the Rutherford goalkeeper. Rutherford also had a couple of chances in the final ten minutes which J Pearson dealt with well in the King’s goal. So this even match ended with the score of 2-2.
