King’s 1st XI defeat Auckland Grammar in a nail biter…

King’s pushed to the brink in tense run chase

Saturday 17 November 2018

AGS 137 all out (44.5 overs)

King’s College 141/6 (49.1 overs)

Auckland Grammar won the toss and got off to a slow but steady opening partnership before a bowling change brought King’s its first success of the morning. Louis Anderson, on debut, picked up a wicket with his first ball – an unforgettable moment for the Year 10 boy. Thereafter wickets fell steadily whilst the AGS top scorer remained composed at the crease hoping to build a reasonable partnership with anyone who had the fortitude to battle alongside him. The 6th wicket fell in the 29th over with AGS on a very shaky 73 runs and in real trouble of failing to reach triple figures. However, a decent partnership emerged for the 7th wicket ensuring that AGS got to a modest but defendable total.

In reply King’s got off to a rollicking start and at one stage it looked likely that the openers would do the job with an early finish looming. Nathan Robinson and Tom Simmonds were unbeaten at the first drinks break for the second week in succession. The Auckland Grammar bowlers had other ideas though and the spin trio got into their groove and dried up the runs. Both the openers threw away their wickets after making sound starts and some brilliant fielding by AGS added to the pressure created by the spinners. Dimithri Gallage was beginning to dominate the AGS bowlers before he was superbly run out. A clump of wickets fell in the middle overs and mild panic set into the King’s camp, allowing the game to drag on into the final over. After a few nervous moments and lucky escapes, William Paranthoiene and Cory Dickson kept their cool and ensured that King’s preserved their unbeaten run this season with two matches remaining in the competition.
