2020 Term One Season

Tennis is a very popular sport played in Terms One and Four.  In Term One, there are two levels, Junior (Years 9 and 10) and Senior (Years 11-13).  In Term Four, only Junior teams have inter-school competition and this is held over five weeks after Labour Weekend.

In Term One 2020, King's College will enter 14 teams of 6 players to participate in the Auckland Secondary Schools' competition, which is played over 7 or 8 weeks, including a Finals round.  Our inter-school teams cater for tournament-level players and club-level participation.  We also run an internal King's players-only season for a further 60 players who will play in a tournament format over 6 weeks.

The College employs professional tennis coaching services from King's Old Collegain and ex-Davis Cup player Mark Nielsen and his coaching team.  All students who play in a King's Team will receive weekly professional coaching during the season. There is a fee disbursed for this professional coaching.

Auckland Champion of Champions Tournament 2019

In the week of 2nd April 2019, a selection of our best King's College tennis players played in the Auckland Championships at u14 (Junior), u16 (Intermediate), or u19 (Senior) level.

Senior Boys (u19):
Lakhan Clark (MAJ) was the 5thseed and reached the Singles quarter-final round before being defeated 6-4,0-6,4-6 by the 2ndseeded player.  Callum Mackay-Peters (PRT) was also defeated in the Singles quarter-final round by the 1stSeeded player.  Together, Lakhan and Callum were the 4thseeds in the Doubles, where they reached the Doubles semi-final round but were again defeated by the 1stseeded pair.

Senior Girls (u19):
Miranda Yuan (TAY) was the 4thseed and reached the Singles quarter-final round where she suffered an upset defeat by the 8thseeded player.  Niuniu Sun (TAY) meanwhile was defeated by the 2ndseeded player, and eventual winner, in the Round of 16.

Intermediate Boys (u16):
Christoph Grant (MAR) was the 5thseed and having returned from Year 10 camp just days before the tournament, was unfortunately defeated by the 2ndseed in the Singles quarter-final.

Junior Boys (u14):
Percy Meehan (AVE) was the 5thseed and reached the Singles quarter-final but lost to the 3rdseed player.  Fraser McLaren (GRE) also reached the Singles quarter-final round but was defeated by the 2ndseed.

2019 NZSS Tennis National Teams Event

In the week of 25thMarch, Callum Mackay-Peters (PRT), Samuel Thomas (GRE), Antonio Escobar-Flaunty (SLW), Miranda Yuan (TAY), Niuniu Sun (TAY), Lucy McLaren (TAY), and Megan Hutchinson (TAY) travelled to Christchurch to represent King’s in the NZSS Tennis National Teams Event.

This event took a different format in 2019 with open entry to all schools, although only players with sufficiently high national rankings could participate at the Championship level. So, King’s entered into the National Teams – Mixed Championship and Girls Cup divisions.

Our King’s College Mixed Team of Miranda Yuan, Niuniu Sun, Callum Mackay-Peters, Samuel Thomas, and Antonio Escobar-Flaunty defeated teams from St Andrews College, Burnside High School, and Kristin College. Whilst matches against both Macleans College and St Kentigern College were lost, the closeness of some individual matches that were played actually helped earn the overall outcome.  The Team played 30 matches, 64 sets, and won 45% of their 524 games to achieve the Bronze medal place in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Tennis National Teams Mixed Championship event.

In the Girls Cup (2nd tier) event, Lucy McLaren and Megan Hutchinson, both played with great spirit and commitment to finish 7th after defeating both St Paul’s Collegiate and Feilding High School. Together, Lucy and Megan played 15 matches, with Megan Hutchinson determinedly winning 4 of her 5 Singles matches.

With all but two of these players eligible to return in 2020, and several talented young Tennis players at school, King’s Tennis is proudly back on the top court.
